A new study published in the JAMA Network Open has found that some progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives may carry a similar clot risk to certain combined pills. Researchers at Aalborg University Hospital in Denmark examined health data from nearly 1.4 million women and found that combined pill desogestrel had the highest adjusted incidence rate ratio for venous thromboembolisms (VTEs), followed by gestodene.
The study, led by Dr. Harman Gailan Hassan Yonis, analyzed health data from women who had never used hormonal birth control and found that VTE rates were as high as 10 per 10,000 person-years for combined pills and 11.9 for injections. The lowest rate was 2.1 for intrauterine devices.
The researchers noted that the study’s results may not be generalizable to other ethnic groups due to the predominantly White and Dutch population included in the study. However, they suggested that clinicians can use the findings to drive personalized counseling and tailor their advice to individual patients’ needs.
