Horror Movie “Sinners” Remains Strong After Weekend Box Office Drop

Horror movie “Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, has scored $45 million in its second weekend of release, despite a 6% decline from its debut. The film’s total gross is now $122.5 million in North America and $161.6 million globally against a $90 million production budget.

This success is impressive for the horror genre, which often sees a significant drop in ticket sales after the opening weekend. “Sinners” has bucked this trend, thanks to glowing reviews and audience enthusiasm.

Competition from new releases like Disney’s re-released “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant 2,” and A24’s “The Legend of Ochi” also had an impact on box office earnings. However, all these films have seen respectable starts despite varying degrees of success.

“Sinners” is expected to maintain its momentum as it stays at the top of the domestic box office, even with the summer movie season kicking off. Its ability to appeal to a wide audience and garner critical acclaim will likely keep it in contention for some time.

The success of “Minecraft Movie,” which remains the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025 so far, has also had an impact on the domestic box office. This shift is seen as a positive sign that films from various genres are drawing crowds, with revenues increasing by 11% compared to last year and 30% ahead of 2019.

As senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes, “Hollywood is on a hot streak in April,” marking a welcome change after the dismal March.
