Horror Movie ‘Weapons’ Surpasses $100 Million Domestic Milestone

Writer-director Zach Cregger’s horror film “Weapons” has achieved a milestone of surpassing $100 million domestically in its 14th day of release, making it the second original R-rated picture of the year to hit this mark. The film, starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, earned an impressive 96% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

The script for “Weapons” was the subject of a heated bidding war when it hit the market, with New Line and Warner Bros. ultimately prevailing over rivals after paying $38 million. Cregger’s deal included a $20 million payday for his work on the Sony’s next Resident Evil movie.

The film tells the story of a teacher who discovers that 17 of her students vanish at the same time, leading to a search by a grieving father who suspects the teacher may be involved. The movie’s success has sparked rumors of a potential prequel exploring the origin story of the character played by Amy Madigan.

“Weapons” has contributed to Warner Bros.’ dominance in the horror genre this year, following the success of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” The film’s marketing campaign was praised for not giving away key twists and instead focusing on building anticipation. It also opened strong at Imax theaters, contributing 34% of its opening weekend gross.

With its impressive box office performance, “Weapons” has solidified Cregger’s position as a rising star in the horror genre, following his successful debut film “Barbarian.”
