Hospital Layoffs Replaced with New Staffing Model

Fresno’s Community Health System is cutting 285 clinical supervising nurse positions but creating 350 new roles in bedside nursing and leadership. The move, aimed at improving patient safety and quality standards, will introduce a new assistant nursing manager role to inpatient units.

The positions affected include 180 at Community Regional Medical Center, 19 at the Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital, and 86 at Clovis Community Hospital. Eliminated roles would have begun on May 3, but due to WARN notice requirements, employees will be notified and given an opportunity to reapply.

A new staffing model, set to start on May 19, aims to retain talented nurses by offering a job for every nurse who wants to continue their career with the hospital. Community employs over 10,000 staff across four medical centers and outpatient facilities, with 3,632 nursing staff members.

The changes come as part of a leadership shake-up under new CEO Craig Wagoner, succeeding Craig Castro’s retirement in November.
