A Yemen-based group called Houthis claimed to have launched a hypersonic missile at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport, days after the Israeli army broke a ceasefire in Gaza. The attack was the second of its kind since US strikes began against the rebels earlier this week.
According to Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree, the operation successfully targeted the airport with a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile. However, Israel’s military said it intercepted the missile before it entered the country’s territory early on Thursday, triggering sirens in several areas, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The US has been conducting airstrikes against Yemen since Saturday, resulting in at least 31 deaths. The Houthis have vowed to escalate their attacks, including on Israel, in response to the US strikes. Since Tuesday, Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza have killed at least 710 Palestinians and injured over 900 others.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the US strikes as a “crime that must be stopped”, while calling for Iran to end its support for the Houthis. The Yemeni group is allied with Iran, but it’s unclear how much they rely on Iranian backing or whether Tehran can dictate their actions.
The conflict in Gaza has seen over 100 attacks by the Houthis on shipping since Israel began its war on the territory in late 2023.
