Yemen’s Houthi rebels have warned shippers that any vessel traveling through the region, including those linked to Israel, is a target for attack. The warning was issued after four-day deadline expired without aid shipments being allowed into Gaza.
The Houthis claim their actions are driven by a desire to pressure Israel to reopen crossings and allow food and medical supplies into Gaza. They have been known to use a loose definition of what constitutes an Israeli ship, putting other vessels at risk as well.
The warning was issued in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and Arabian Sea, and is likely to put more ships at risk. Maritime security firm Ambrey warned that the statements from the Houthis were “ambiguous,” potentially targeting Israeli-owned vessels or those operated by individuals linked to Israel.
The US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which patrols the region, said it remains vigilant. The Houthis have a history of attacking ships, including American and Western warships, since November 2023. This is part of their efforts to raise their profile amid economic problems and a crackdown on dissent in Yemen.
