Yemen’s Houthi rebels have announced they will limit their attacks on ships passing through the Red Sea corridor to only those affiliated with Israel. The move, made via email to shippers and others, comes as a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip entered its second day.
The Houthis’ decision, made by their Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center, effectively ends sanctions on other vessels they had previously targeted since November 2023. However, it leaves room for resuming attacks against the US and UK, which have launched airstrikes targeting the rebels.
Since October 2023, the Houthis have targeted around 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, resulting in one seized vessel, two sunk ships, and four sailor fatalities. The conflict has also killed over 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials.
