New York City’s congestion pricing has officially started, and drivers are now receiving tolls by mail. The program aims to reduce traffic congestion and encourage the use of mass transit.
To navigate the new system, E-ZPass is recommended for driving south of 60th Street into the zone. Without an E-ZPass, cameras will read license plates, resulting in a toll-by-mail bill within 30-45 days. License plate tolls are 50% more than regular tolls, costing $13.50 instead of $9.
For those with questions or disputes, the MTA customer service line is available at 511. The MTA has increased staff to handle potential issues, and on Sundays during January, the line will be open for an extra hour.
Discounts are available for low-income drivers earning less than $50,000 a year. Out-of-state drivers can also qualify for a discount if they create a New York E-ZPass account. Additionally, driving into the zone after 9 p.m. can result in lower tolls, with prices ranging from $2.25 to $9.
The MTA is warning of a text scheme impersonating “New York Toll Services” and advising drivers not to click on suspicious links or share personal information.
