How to Blow Your Nose Without Hurting Yourself

When you have a cold or allergies, the last thing you want to do is blow your nose repeatedly. However, when the symptoms strike, grabbing a tissue can be our go-to move. But did you know that overblowing could be doing more harm than good?

The human nose creates 1-2 liters of mucus daily, and when we’re sick, it thickens to trap viruses. Forceful blowing pushes out the thick mucus, giving us temporary relief. However, if done incorrectly, it can worsen symptoms.

ENTs recommend avoiding tissues altogether and instead using saltwater sprays or saline irrigation to clear congestion. When you do blow your nose, consider this:

* Place a finger on the opposite nostril from the side being blown on.
* Close the nostril to prevent air from escaping through the other side.
* Blow gently so air and mucus are ejected through the side you’re trying to clear.

Using softer tissue with ingredients like aloe and menthol can also help.

Other alternatives include nasal decongestants, warm compresses over the face, and steam to loosen up mucus naturally. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you and taking care of your nose in the process.
