Google has issued a warning to its 2 billion users to replace their passwords with a secure passkey to mitigate the risk of email hacking. A recent study found that 61% of US consumers have been targeted by email attacks, and over 60% perceive an increase in scams over the past year.
The company’s vice-president of privacy, safety, and security, Evan Kotsovinos, strongly encourages users to make a simple change: switch from passwords to passkeys. Passkeys are more secure than traditional passwords because they use public-private key systems, making it nearly impossible for hackers to guess or intercept them.
To replace your password with a passkey in three easy steps:
1. Ensure you have the necessary devices and software, including a computer running Windows 10 or macOS Ventura, a smartphone running iOS 16 or Android 9, and a compatible browser.
2. Access your Google Account settings and select the Passkeys option under Security Settings.
3. Create a passkey by following the prompts and verifying your identity using fingerprint or facial recognition.
By switching to a passkey, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of email hacking. Google’s move towards passkeys is part of its effort to enhance security and make sign-ins easier while keeping them safe.
