DreamWorks has relaunched “How to Train Your Dragon,” a scene-for-scene remake of the 2010 animated blockbuster, just three weeks after Disney’s live-action update of “Lilo & Stitch.” Instead of handing over the reins to a new director, Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois are back in charge, this time with an upgraded visual effect.
The script remains largely faithful to its original counterpart, with the core of the story centered around Hiccup, a young Viking who defies his tribe’s tradition by befriending a dragon. The updated version retains its emotional authenticity, leveraging advanced effects to make the dragons look and feel photorealistic.
DeBlois’ key decision was casting Mason Thames as Hiccup, giving him puppy-dog appeal and heartthrob potential. The chemistry between Thames and co-star Nico Parker’s Astrid is undeniable, especially in their romance scenes. The human cast, including Nick Frost and Bronwyn James, delivers convincing performances that bring the cartoon characters to life.
The updated “How to Train Your Dragon” takes the foundation set by the original and strengthens it for potential sequels. With DeBlois’ vision, the film becomes even more iconic, unlocking its full expressionistic power and bringing the fantastical story closer to reality.
