Howard Miller Clocks to Close After Nearly Century as Zeeland Staple

Zeeland-based clock manufacturer Howard Miller announced its closure after nearly a century in operation. The company cited economic challenges, including tariffs and a decline in the furniture industry, as the reason for its shutdown. Residents expressed sadness over the loss of the community staple, citing both economic impacts and a sense of loss of identity.

The iconic clock tower has symbolized the company’s presence, but with closure, many feel it marks a profound symbolic loss. The Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations have offered support to employees and their families, including job search assistance and potential repurposing of the headquarters site.

Founded in 1926 by Howard C. Miller, the company employed nearly 200 workers across four manufacturing plants. Although production will continue until 2025, the closure marks a significant change for the community. Local leaders emphasized the significance of Howard Miller to Zeeland’s identity and economy, with plans to preserve its legacy through various community centers and buildings.
