Howard Stern Faces Uncertain Future at SiriusXM After Contract Expiration

Iconic radio host Howard Stern is facing an uncertain future at SiriusXM after 20 years with the satellite radio provider. According to reports, Stern’s contract will expire late this year and despite SiriusXM planning to offer him a new deal, they do not intend for him to accept it.

Stern has pivoted his show away from its roots as a pioneer of the “shock jock” format, instead embracing a more liberal tone. This shift has led to criticism from some who feel he is no longer a true shock jock. In 2023, Stern famously said being labeled “woke” was a compliment.

Stern’s contract negotiations with SiriusXM are ongoing, and it’s unclear whether he will receive the type of deal he seeks. The Daily Mail reported that Stern may accept a one- to two-year contract if SiriusXM can meet him financially.

SiriusXM president Scott Greenstein has praised Stern as a singular talent and hopes he continues on his show. However, some have questioned whether Stern’s evolution from shock jock to liberal mouthpiece makes him less valuable to the station.

Despite this uncertainty, some in the industry are coming to Stern’s defense. Heritage Foundation media fellow Tim Young believes Stern is a legend in radio, even with his new ideology. He sees Stern as one of the greatest influences on culture and believes he will continue to be relevant for years to come.
