HPAI Spreads in Nebraska with New Backyard Flock Case

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture confirmed a new case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Dawson County. This marks the third infected flock detected this year in central Nebraska, following cases in Kearney and Nance counties. To date, four backyard flocks—totaling approximately 219 birds—have been impacted in 2025.

Officials urge poultry owners to practice strict biosecurity measures: limit contact with wild birds, wash hands, and change clothing before interacting with domestic flocks. HPAI spreads through bird secretions, contaminated environments, or exposure to migratory birds. While wild birds may resist the virus, domesticated birds are highly susceptible, exhibiting symptoms like sudden death, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and abnormal egg production.

The virus can survive weeks in contaminated areas and often causes fatal infections even without visible symptoms. Owners noticing signs of illness should report concerns immediately.
