Huawei’s supply chain team is working overtime to meet demand for its new Mate 70 smartphones, with reservations exceeding 6.7 million so far. CEO He Gang described the demand as “excessive”. The company launched the phone last week, but analysts predict a shortage of chips could impact production.
The Mate 70 series marks Huawei’s first major commercial rollout of HarmonyOS NEXT, an Android-free operating system that aims to reduce the company’s reliance on US technology. However, analysts note that consumer excitement is lower than expected, and perfecting the user experience may take another two to three months.
Huawei plans to equip all its new phones next year with HarmonyOS NEXT. The company is facing challenges in meeting demand for the Mate 70 due to insufficient supplies, but it remains committed to developing its own software solutions.
