Huawei has launched the Pura X foldable smartphone, priced at 7,499 Chinese yuan ($1,037). The device features a unique 16:10 aspect ratio display, offering more screen area than most smartphones on the market. When unfolded, it showcases a 6.3-inch screen, while folding in half reveals a compact square with a 3.5-inch display and camera.
The Pura X marks Huawei’s first smartphone to run HarmonyOS 5, its latest self-developed operating system. After being launched as HarmonyOS Next in November, the new OS has dropped Google’s Android code. This move signifies Huawei’s independence from Google and Android, a significant shift following U.S. sanctions in 2019.
Huawei aims to challenge Apple and Google with its unique offerings. The Pura X is the first in a series of unusual devices, including a trifold smartphone. In China, Huawei has seen a resurgence in sales since the end of 2023, with market share rising to 16.2% in the fourth quarter of 2024.
The device comes equipped with Xiaoyi, Huawei’s AI assistant powered by its own artificial intelligence models and those developed by DeepSeek.
