Hubble Space Telescope Turns 35 Years Old with Stunning New Images

The Hubble Space Telescope, launched 35 years ago, has captured breathtaking images of far-away galaxies, black holes, and planets. To celebrate its milestone anniversary, NASA released new striking photos, including a vibrant rendition of Mars and an extraordinary photo of a moth-shaped nebula.

Built by Lockheed Martin in California, the Hubble telescope was launched on April 24, 1990, aboard the space shuttle Discovery. Since its orbit above the Earth, it has outperformed ground-based telescopes with its cosmic images. Over its lifetime, Hubble has made over 1.6 million observations and spawned more than 21,000 science papers.

Designed to be serviced and upgraded in orbit, the Hubble telescope features three key instruments: cameras for visible-light imaging, spectrographs to analyze light and assess object properties, and interferometers to measure star positions and brightness.

NASA is releasing new images to show that the Hubble Space Telescope remains a vital tool in space exploration. With its incredible discoveries and continued contributions to science, the Hubble telescope solidifies its place as one of the most successful space observatories ever built.
