Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) Facts and Prevention

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common virus that causes the upper respiratory infection known as the common cold. It usually makes people mildly sick, but it can cause severe illness in some individuals.

Here’s what you need to know about hMPV:

* The virus spreads through infectious respiratory particles in the air and on contaminated surfaces.
* Infants, older adults, and those with certain health conditions are at higher risk for severe illness.
* People can treat their symptoms with over-the-counter medicines and get plenty of rest.

To prevent hMPV infection, follow these steps:

* Wear a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces
* Improve ventilation where possible
* Clean hands regularly
* Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth without cleaning hands first

Currently, there is no vaccine licensed for use against hMPV. However, researchers are working on one.

If you suspect you have hMPV, seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen. A PCR test can diagnose the virus with high accuracy within a few hours.
