Human Rights Watch Accuses Israel of Genocide in Gaza Over Water Access

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Israel of committing “acts of genocide” in Gaza by deliberately denying Palestinian civilians access to adequate water. The group says Israel’s actions, including damaging water infrastructure and blocking fuel for generators, have probably caused thousands of deaths.

According to HRW, Israel’s policies have led to a calculated policy of deprivation that has resulted in the deaths of thousands due to dehydration and disease. The report is based on interviews with dozens of Palestinians from Gaza, as well as satellite imagery and data from October 2023 to September 2024.

HRW’s executive director Tirana Hassan stated that Israel’s actions are “nothing short of the crime against humanity of extermination and an act of genocide.” The organization claims that the findings may indicate intent to destroy a national group.

However, Israel rejected HRW’s report as “propaganda” and claimed it was spreading “blood libels.” The Israeli foreign ministry said that despite constant attacks by Hamas, Israel had facilitated the continuous flow of water and humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is currently examining a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide, while other rights groups have also accused Israel of committing genocide in its campaign in Gaza.
