A recent study by Jay Falk discovered a white-necked jacobin hummingbird chick with unusual camouflage resembling toxic caterpillars. The young bird’s feathers mimic the urticating hairs of certain caterpillars, which deter predators from attacking. This is the first time such a defense mechanism has been observed in hummingbirds. Researchers believe that high nest predation rates led to the evolution of this unique strategy.
