A kayaker was briefly scooped up by a humpback whale off the coast of Chile’s Patagonia region before being released unharmed. Adrián Simancas, 25, was kayaking with his father Dell near the San Isidro lighthouse in Bahía El Águila when a whale surfaced and engulfed him and his kayak.
Dell captured the incident on video, saying “Stay calm, stay calm” as he tried to reassure his son. Adrián described the terrifying experience, fearing for his life and worried about his father’s safety. Despite the scare, both men were rescued unharmed after a few seconds in the water. The incident highlights the risks of adventure activities in the Strait of Magellan, which is known for its cold waters and challenging conditions.
