Hundreds Trapped Underground in South African Gold Mine Incident

A ‘shaft incident’ at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Kloof gold mine near Johannesburg has left hundreds of workers trapped underground, but all 260 employees have been accounted for and provided with food. The company says it is implementing safety procedures to ensure their safe return to the surface.

According to the company, the incident occurred in the sub-shaft when a rock winder skip door opened at level 39, affecting levels below. The damage caused by the open door was reported at level 35, and repairs have since been completed.

Sibanye-Stillwater spokesperson clarified that the workers are not trapped and will be brought to the surface once it is safe to do so. The company expects all affected employees to be back on the surface around midday today.

The incident is under investigation, but initial findings show that the cause was due to a faulty skip door.
