Hungary Accuses Ukraine of Attacking Russian Oil Pipeline

Hungary has accused Ukraine of attacking a Russian oil pipeline supplying the NATO ally, while criticizing Western involvement in helping Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion. The Orban government has diverged from its allies on Ukraine, seeking to maintain relations with Moscow.

According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, Ukraine’s armed forces struck the Unecha oil pumping station in Russia’s Bryansk region, disabling a pipeline that supplies Russian oil to Hungary. Szijjártó described the attack as “outrageous and unacceptable” and blamed Ukraine for trying to drag Hungary into the war.

Ukraine, however, claims that Russia started the war and should address its complaints with Moscow. The country’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet US President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington, D.C., to discuss a peace settlement and Russian demands.

Hungary has been criticized for its stance on Ukraine, opposing Kyiv’s ambitions to join the EU and refusing to co-sign a statement supporting the country. The attack on the oil pipeline has further strained relations between Hungary and other European countries.
