Hungary Denounces EU Aid Package for Ukraine Amid Tensions with EU

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has denounced EU plans to provide Ukraine with an additional $22 billion in aid, citing concerns over financing arms shipments. The move comes as tensions rise between Budapest and Brussels over Hungary’s stance on the conflict.

Szijjarto said Hungary will not be dragged into supporting the package, insisting instead that Budapest backs peace negotiations. He claims the EU’s intention to facilitate negotiations is “unacceptable” due to a pro-war stance in Brussels.

The proposal for a 20-billion-euro aid package was first discussed in February but remained absent from an emergency EU summit on March 6. Hungarian leader Viktor Orban has consistently delayed sanctions against Russia and expressed support for President Trump’s reelection, expecting a swift end to the war.

European leaders are growing increasingly concerned about Budapest’s efforts to disrupt unity on Ukraine, following recent unanimous extension of sanctions against Russia.
