Hungary Withdraws From International Criminal Court Amid Netanyahu Visit

Hungary has begun the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court, a move that comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the country despite an arrest warrant issued by the global tribunal for war crimes and genocide.

Netanyahu arrived in Budapest on Thursday, receiving full military honors at Budapest Castle District. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced plans to initiate withdrawal procedures from the ICC, which could take a year or more to complete.

Orbán views the ICC as “a political court,” stating that it has “degraded into a political tool.” The Hungarian leader believes the ICC is interfering in an ongoing conflict for political purposes. Netanyahu praised Hungary’s decision, saying it is a “bold and principled” move.

The ICC has criticized Hungary’s defiance, with its spokesperson recalling that Hungary remains under a duty to cooperate with the court. Hamas has condemned Hungary’s move as “immoral,” calling on the country to reverse its decision and hand Netanyahu over to the ICC for trial.

Netanyahu’s visit marks his second foreign trip since an ICC warrant was issued against him in November, following a war in Gaza that has resulted in significant loss of life and violence. The Israeli leader faces mounting discontent at home due to his handling of the conflict, including mass protests and criticism from top officials.
