Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has expressed opposition to financing Ukraine’s military efforts, calling it “ruinous” for Europe. In a statement on Friday, Orban said the EU cannot afford to support Ukraine while US financial aid is uncertain, citing concerns that prolonging the war would have devastating consequences.
Orban also suggested supporting former US President Donald Trump’s peace talks over continuing the conflict, stating that this approach would be more beneficial for Europe. The Hungarian PM plans to launch a domestic public consultation on Ukraine’s European Union accession in the coming weeks.
The comments come as EU leaders recently signed a statement showing support for Ukraine without Hungary’s participation. This has raised concerns about the future of US-NATO relations and the potential for increased Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.
