US President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In an interview with journalist Andrew Callaghan, Biden claimed that Netanyahu’s approach to Iran is motivated by a desire to “save his own a** from jail” amid his ongoing corruption trial.
Biden also accused critics on the left of withholding powerful US bombs from Israel and helping open aid routes into Gaza. He described the Israeli government as “the worst thing that’s happened to the Jewish people.” The US envoy is flying to Doha to mediate Gaza ceasefire talks, with a 60-day truce planned.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the Israeli government to cease its military operations in Gaza and allow humanitarian aid to reach the people. Over 59,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023. The UN has also condemned US withdrawal from UNESCO as a “politicisation” of cultural heritage.
Israel is advancing plans to increase illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, with over 900 new settlement units planned. Palestinian officials have accused the Israeli government of grave violations of basic human rights. A teenage boy was killed by Israeli forces in the town of Qabatiya in Jenin, and nearly 80 students were expelled or suspended from Columbia University over a Gaza protest.
As starvation intensifies in Gaza, Israeli attacks have killed at least 63 people, including 26 aid seekers, since dawn. The conflict has sparked widespread criticism from world leaders, with many calling for an immediate ceasefire.
