Hurricane Barbara Brings Life-Threatening Swells to Mexico’s Coast

A powerful storm system, Hurricane Barbara, has intensified off Mexico’s western coast, bringing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions to southwestern regions. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that swells generated by the storm will affect coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco states over the next few days.

As of Monday afternoon, Barbara was located 175 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm’s center is moving northwest at 10 mph, forecast to weaken around nightfall as it approaches the Baja Peninsula.

Heavy rainfall and localized flooding are expected in coastal areas, while gusty winds are likely along the southwestern Mexican coast. No coastal warnings or watches were in effect on Monday morning, but residents are advised to monitor the situation closely.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Cosme strengthened slightly, moving northwest at 9 mph, about 605 miles south-southwest of Baja California’s tip. It is expected to reach near-hurricane strength on Monday and turn northeast Tuesday into Wednesday, picking up speed.
