Hurricane Barbara Forms in Eastern Pacific as First Storm of 2025 Season

Hurricane Barbara formed on Monday morning in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, southwest of Mexico, marking the first storm of the 2025 hurricane season. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Barbara’s maximum sustained winds reached 75 mph, officially designating it as a hurricane.

The NHC warned that Barbara is expected to bring rainfall totals of 2-4 inches with locally higher amounts, posing concerns for flooding and mudslides in the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco. Large waves at local beaches are also forecast to cause life-threatening rip currents.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Cosme is forecast to intensify into a hurricane later Monday. The NHC said that Cosme’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph with higher gusts, but rapid weakening is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday.

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to November 30, and the NHC has already issued a warning for potential development of another area later this week.
