Hurricanes Down Capitals 5-1 to Clinch Playoff Berth

The Carolina Hurricanes dominated the Washington Capitals, winning 5-1 on Wednesday night at the Lenovo Center. The win marks their seventh consecutive playoff berth. Goalie Frederick Andersen secured his seventh consecutive win.

The game got off to a strong start for the Canes, with Sean Walker scoring six minutes into the game and Jackson Blake adding another just four minutes later. Seth Jarvis followed suit with a powerplay goal three minutes after Blake’s second score, putting the game out of reach.

The Capitals had some moments in the second period but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Logan Stankoven scored on a breakaway midway through the period to make it 4-0.

However, Alex Ovechkin scored with just 35 seconds left in the period before Blake added his third goal late in the game. The Capitals had 18 penalties for 74 minutes, while the Hurricanes had 15 penalties for 68 minutes.

The two teams will meet again in Washington in eight days. Andrei Svechnikov was forced to exit the game early due to injury and an update on his status will be provided on Friday.
