Hyatt Hotels & Resorts is set to acquire Playa Hotels & Resorts, a leading operator of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, for approximately $2.6 billion. The acquisition, expected to be completed by the end of 2025, will add significant value to Hyatt’s portfolio.
Hyatt currently owns 9.4% of Playa’s shares and will take on around $900 million worth of accumulated debt as part of the deal. The company is looking forward to expanding its management platform for all-inclusive resorts under the new ownership.
The acquisition marks another major expansion for Hyatt, which has already added several new brands to its portfolio in recent years. In 2021, Hyatt acquired Apple Leisure Group and established a 50/50 joint venture with Grupo PiƱero, gaining control of the Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts brand.
Playa’s resorts include popular destinations like Wyndham Alltra in Playa del Carmen, Mexico; Jewel Grande Resort & Spa in Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Seadust Cancun Family Resort in Cancun, Mexico. Hyatt has been investing in Playa since 2013, introducing the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara brands throughout the Caribbean.
The acquisition is a significant move for Hyatt, which aims to further diversify its operations and strengthen its position in the all-inclusive resort market.
