Hydrothermal Explosion Occurs Near Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin

On July 23 at around 10:19 a.m., a localized hydrothermal explosion occurred near Sapphire Pool in Biscuit Basin, north of Old Faithful. The area is temporarily closed for safety reasons.

The Grand Loop Road remains open, and no injuries were reported. The extent of the damage is unknown. Park staff and USGS staff will monitor conditions to reopen the area once deemed safe.

There are no signs of changes in the Yellowstone region’s volcanic system. This incident does not reflect a change in the volcanic activity, which remains at normal background levels. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.+
