US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) flights out of the Los Angeles area have more than doubled in the last month. The agency has conducted multiple raids in the region since June 6, resulting in the arrest of over 330 people, some of whom were flown out of the area.
According to a volunteer immigration advocate, nearly 70% of deportation-related flights from the L.A. region originated from the Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, near the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. Flights have also departed from other airports such as Burbank International and Meadows Field in Bakersfield.
ICE Air Operations, based in Mesa, Arizona, is responsible for arranging removal travel and domestic transfers using both commercial airlines and charter aircraft. The agency has not released details about future flights due to security reasons.
The recent surge in ICE flight activity is part of a larger trend. Since January 1, ICE has made over 685 deportation stops to more than 30 international destinations. The agency regularly flies deportees to countries in Central America, as well as other parts of the world for special high-risk missions.
ICE has also announced plans to expand detention capacity in California, with CoreCivic agreeing to convert a facility into a federal immigrant detention center.
