ICE Raids Spark Outrage in Lane County, Residents Call for Support

Residents of Lane County gathered with local commissioners to express outrage over recent federal immigration enforcement actions and to demand their support in standing up for the rights of immigrant communities. Juanita Avila, a business owner from Cottage Grove, was detained despite her lawful status during an ICE raid.

Many residents shared their personal stories of fear and trauma after witnessing or experiencing the raids, with some calling it “barbaric” and “terror” that has shattered peace in the community. The commissioners expressed support for immigrant communities and promised to help, but their previous vote on a statement reaffirming the county’s sanctuary promise ended in a split.

Commissioners David Loveall and Heather Buch commended Avila for sharing her story, while Commissioner Laurie Trieger praised county administrators for providing emergency assistance to families impacted by federal immigration activity. The commissioners acknowledged that the issue affects everyone and encouraged residents to be involved in building strong relationships with those from diverse backgrounds.
