A volcanic eruption in southwestern Iceland has forced the evacuation of local residents and the internationally known Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. The eruption began on Wednesday morning following an intense seismic swarm on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
About 100 people were evacuated from the town of Grindavik shortly after the seismic activity started. Tourists at a nearby campsite and guests at the Blue Lagoon were also forced to leave quickly. The evacuation lasted around 90 minutes, according to Margrét Kristín Pálsdóttir, a local police commissioner.
The lava from the eruption is flowing southeast from a fissure in the barren landscape, but it’s not threatening any infrastructure, according to the Met Office. Grindavik has been affected by volcanic activity since November 2023, when a nearby volcano came to life after lying dormant for over 800 years.
