Surf and skate-inspired clothing brands, including Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom, and more, are expected to close stores in Hawaii by 2025. The closures come after Liberated Brands filed for bankruptcy and affected brands’ locations already started holding sales.
Retail experts say that surfwear store closures hit especially hard in Hawaii, where residents have adapted to changing weather conditions by wearing shorts and slippers all year round. Sales at local shops in Hawaii are 10-30% off, while online sales are 60% off for brands like RVCA, Roxy, and Volcom.
The owner of Blue Planet Surf, which leases its Haleiwa store to Volcom, is facing uncertainty as payments due on January 1st. The brand’s website advises customers to use up their remaining gift cards by February 16th. However, Liberated Brands’ statement says that plans for Hawaii stores are “in flux” and the company is evaluating options for a buyer.
As surf brands struggle, some experts believe there may be opportunities for new brands to step in if they prioritize authenticity. With over 100 stores closing nationwide, the impact on Hawaii’s retail scene will be significant.
