Idaho Reports First West Nile Virus Death This Year

Idaho has reported its first death from West Nile virus this year, with a Twin Falls County resident over 65 years old being the victim. The virus is spread by infected mosquito bites and has been detected in seven southern Idaho counties and neighboring Oregon.

According to Dr. Kathy Turner, Deputy State Epidemiologist, people should take protective measures against mosquito bites to avoid getting infected. This includes wearing long sleeves and pants outside, using insect repellent, and reducing standing water where mosquitoes can lay their eggs around the home and yard.

West Nile virus can cause mild symptoms in most people, but severe illness can lead to hospitalization and even death. Older adults and those with certain medical conditions are at higher risk of severe illness. To protect against West Nile virus infection, it’s essential to avoid mosquitoes during peak hours (dusk and dawn) and follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines for insect repellent use.

Residents can take steps such as wearing permethrin-treated clothing, covering strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting, and ensuring their homes have effective screens. Additionally, checking and draining outdoor water containers regularly can help prevent mosquito breeding sites. For more information on West Nile virus in Idaho, visit https://westnile.idaho.gov.
