Idaho Wildlife Refuge Warns of Avian Flu Outbreak

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has warned visitors to Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho about a suspected outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Snow geese are most affected, with dead birds collected from the refuge being sent to a lab for diagnosis.

Visitors are advised not to approach or touch sick or dead birds. The virus, which is easily transmissible and can be passed by contaminated individuals and surfaces, is present in the Pacific Flyway, including Idaho.

Biologists working to prevent the spread of HPAI must wear protective gear and gloves. While rare, the virus can also be transmitted to humans. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for birds with influenza symptoms, making mortality the most likely outcome.
