The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) successfully targeted Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar in an operation that was months in the making. According to reports, intelligence gathered by Israeli agencies identified Sinwar’s planned meeting with his military wing’s leadership at a secret location beneath Khan Yunis’s European Hospital.
The meeting took place shortly after the IDF received this information, resulting in explosions in the area. Sinwar is considered one of Gaza Strip’s most hardline and ruthless leaders, refusing to compromise on negotiations with Israel.
US pressure led to Sinwar backing down from his stance, but he continued to be involved in the conflict as a key figure. The Hamas leader’s compound was believed to have had a conference room and command center, where he managed the war since his brother Yahya’s death by IDF forces in October 2024.
Sinwar’s operation was reportedly formulated six months ago, but it was postponed several times due to various reasons. Security officials describe Sinwar as someone who operated under senior Hamas figures’ shadow while exhibiting cruel nature through planning attacks and executing collaborators.
Despite being labeled “Yahya’s brother” by the Hamas leadership, which granted him respect, Sinwar’s influence was not exclusive at any point. His status improved after his brother’s release in 2011, making him a key figure in special affairs and policies against Israel. The neutralization of this top Hamas leader marks a significant event as he had extensive experience and understanding of the Israeli side.
