Iga Swiatek has made history by reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time, defeating Liudmila Samsonova in a thrilling match. The Polish star, seeded eighth, was calm from day one and held her nerve to claim a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the world number 19.
Swiatek’s confidence has been restored after reaching the quarter-finals at the French Open, where she had previously lost form on clay. She arrived at Wimbledon in relaxed mood, having won her first grass-court final earlier this month. The dry conditions may have helped, but it was Swiatek’s improved technique and mental toughness that made the difference.
Leading by a set and 4-2, 40-0, Swiatek looked cruising to victory. However, Samsonova mounted a bold fightback, forcing the issue from the baseline. The Polish star dug deep, finding her forehand again when it mattered most, whipping another return winner to seal the win.
Swiatek will now face Belinda Bencic in the semi-finals, having won three of their four meetings this year. She expressed admiration for the Swiss player, who is into the semi-finals for the first time also, after giving birth just over a year ago. Swiatek’s victory marked a significant milestone in her season, and she aims to continue her impressive form.
“I’m super-proud of myself,” Swiatek said. “I really worked hard here to progress on this surface. I had time to practise a little bit more, and my confidence went up match by match.”
