A new law proposed by Illinois State Rep. Dan Swanson aims to raise awareness about Alpha-gal syndrome, also known as red meat allergy. The disease is caused by the Lone Star tick bite and affects a person’s ability to consume red meat, leading to anaphylactic shock.
According to Swanson, his mother has suffered from the condition for several years, forcing her to avoid restaurants where burgers are fried on open grills due to the strong aroma that triggers her reaction. The proposal would require medical reporters to report cases of Alpha-gal syndrome in Illinois, similar to how Lyme disease reports are handled.
The measure also provides tips on reducing tick bites, such as wearing protective clothing, applying insect repellent, and checking for ticks after hiking. With no cure currently available, Swanson’s initiative seeks to educate the public about this growing tick-borne disease.
