Illinois Voters Cast Vote on New State Flag Design

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has opened a voting portal for residents to choose their preferred new state flag design. Voters can select from 10 designs, including the current flag, or opt for alternative options such as the 1918 centennial flag or 1968 sesquicentennial flag. Voting is open through February 14.

Individuals can cast one vote per day, allowing them to choose either the same or a different design each day. To participate in the online voting process, visit www.ilsos.gov/stateflag.

The Illinois Flag Commission’s recommendations will inform a report set to be released by April 1, which will then be presented to the General Assembly for consideration. The commission consists of current and former lawmakers, state agency representatives, and other advocates appointed by state officials. It was established in 2022 as part of Senate Bill 1818.

The ten flag designs were selected from over 4,800 entries received from a diverse range of designers, including Illinois natives, students, and veterans’ family members. The new flag’s design will ultimately be chosen by the General Assembly after receiving input from the public.
