The upcoming “Wizard of Oz” experience at the Las Vegas Sphere promises an unparalleled adventure for audiences, transporting them from 2D to 4D. The venue’s massive 160,000 square feet screen will come alive with vibrant visuals and immersive haptics, recreating Dorothy’s journey in ways never seen before.
Produced by Jane Rosenthal, Oscar-nominated producer, the experience is a natural fit for the Sphere due to its generation-spanning appeal and elements that can be made immersive. The film has been in development for two years with a team of over 2,000 filmmakers, technicians, and audio experts working to transform Oz from a traditional 2D world into an extraordinary envelopment of sight and sound.
The $104 admission price seems steep, but the cutting-edge experience and Vegas location justify it. The team worked closely with Warner Bros. and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to mine the “Oz” archives, using ethical AI to extend frames and fill the Sphere screen resolution.
According to Rosenthal, the goal was to preserve the heart of the film while elevating it to immersive heights. Award-winning technician Glenn Derry oversaw the physical effects in the venue, refining minutiae such as the breathtaking moment when Dorothy awakens in her sepia-toned heartland.
When the “Wizard of Oz” experience opens on August 28 at the Sphere, audiences will embark on a cinematic journey they’ll never forget. With emotion, revelations, and nostalgia woven throughout, it’s an experience that simply cannot be duplicated.
