Immigration Enforcement Limit Demands Divide Congress

A standoff between Democrats and Republicans over immigration enforcement limits has led to a looming deadline for the Department of Homeland Security. With funding set to expire on Saturday, negotiations remain stagnant despite calls from Democrats for new restrictions.

Democrats want immigration officers to show visible identification and need judicial warrants before making arrests on private property. These demands come after two American citizens were killed by federal immigration officers in Minnesota last month.

Republicans reject these proposals as “overly burdensome” and threaten the safety of their agents. The party’s majority leader, John Thune, has not received any legislative text from Democrats. If no deal is reached, a shutdown will affect various agencies, including FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the Secret Service, with employees going without pay.
