India’s government has ordered a thorough investigation into the deadly crash of an Air India Boeing 787, which killed at least 270 people. The aviation minister said all 34 planes in the Indian fleet would be inspected urgently after eight have already been checked.
Air India operates 33 Boeing 787s and one IndiGo plane is also involved. However, no planes have been grounded yet. The government is considering this option. Experts point to issues with engine thrust, flaps, and landing gear as potential causes of the crash.
The investigation will focus on several aspects, including engine performance and why the landing gear remained open during takeoff and landing. A panel has been formed to investigate the crash and will issue a report within three months.
A crisis has unfolded outside an Ahmedabad hospital where many families are waiting for bodies of loved ones killed in the crash. Authorities are using dental samples to identify victims, but some families are growing impatient with the lack of information.
The incident has cast a shadow on Air India, which struggles to rebuild its reputation and revamp its fleet after Tata Group took over in 2022.
