India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to hunt down the gunmen responsible for a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir that killed 26 people, describing it as a “terror attack” with alleged “cross border” links.
The gunfight between Indian and Pakistani soldiers along their disputed border in Kashmir comes amid soaring tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals. Pakistan’s government denied any connection to the attack, which was later claimed by militant group “Kashmir Resistance.”
Tensions have been escalating since the attack on Tuesday. India has announced diplomatic actions against Pakistan, including suspending a decades-old water-sharing treaty, shutting down their only land border crossing, and revoking all visas issued to Pakistani nationals.
In response, Pakistan has cancelled visas for Indian citizens, closed its airspace to Indian-owned airlines, and halted bilateral trade. The country also warned that any attempt by India to stop or divert the flow of water would be considered an “act of war” and met with “full force across the full spectrum” of Pakistan’s national power.
The United Nations has urged both countries to exercise maximum restraint and ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further. Diplomatic clashes between India and Pakistan have been ongoing for years, but the recent escalation in tensions marks a significant increase in the level of hostility between the two nuclear-armed rivals.
