The Indian government has assured that arrangements will be made to bring back citizens who were deported to Panama, once their nationality is verified. This comes after the US deported 299 migrants, including about 50 Indians, to Panama City. The US and India have agreed on a “bridge arrangement” where Central American nations act as transit countries for deportees while the US bears the costs.
The Indian embassy in Panama has been verifying the identity of deportees and will make arrangements for their return once confirmed as Indian nationals. Deportees will be provided documents, but details are still unclear. The Indian government has expressed concerns about the handling of deportees, including the use of handcuffs and shackles, which are to be avoided due to religious sensitivities.
The US is conducting deportation flights under this arrangement, while the Indian embassy in Costa Rica remains unaware of any deportations through official channels. The two countries have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling illegal immigration, with a focus on strengthening law enforcement cooperation and securing mobility frameworks for students and professionals.
