Two children from rural areas in Gujarat underwent emergency eye surgeries after being injured by homemade explosives, known as carbide guns, during Diwali celebrations. The 11-year-old and the 15-year-old suffered severe corneal damage due to exposure to the blasts. Doctors warn that such injuries can lead to complete vision loss if left untreated.
Carbide guns are crude, homemade explosive devices created through a chemical reaction between calcium carbide and water. When ignited, they release acetylene gas, causing a violent explosion. Despite being banned in most parts of the state, carbide guns were sold widely during Diwali, leading to multiple injuries, including those sustained by children.
The police have arrested two individuals in connection with the illegal sale of carbide guns. Authorities are urging people to be cautious and report any suspicious activities to prevent further accidents.
In this incident, it’s essential for parents to educate their children about the dangers of homemade explosives and ensure they do not handle such devices during festivals or any other time.
