Indiana to Hire Dusty May as Head Coach

Indiana University is set to name Michigan head coach Dusty May its next men’s basketball head coach, after making him an offer despite his reluctance to leave Ann Arbor. The 42-year-old May, a former student manager at Indiana under Bob Knight from 1996 to 2000, is expected to be the Hoosiers’ top target for the job.

May left a lasting impression on the Indiana faithful during Michigan’s homecoming game against the Hoosiers, guiding his team to a 70-67 victory. When asked about replacing him at Michigan, May stated he “loves being at Michigan” and has no intention of leaving. However, he acknowledged that some friends and family have expressed concerns.

May’s impressive credentials include leading Florida Atlantic to the Final Four as a 9-seed in 2023, winning 35 games. He replaced Juwan Howard at Michigan last spring and has a buyout of $5 million, although he would also need to repay his signing bonus of around $1.5 million if he were to leave before April 1, 2025.

The decision comes after Indiana announced that Mike Woodson is stepping down as head coach following the season. Woodson had been in charge of the Hoosiers for four seasons, replacing Archie Miller in 2021. Despite leading them to the NCAA tournament in his first two seasons, they missed the postseason last year and are currently on a five-game losing streak.
