India’s SC Dismisses Plea for Independent Investigation into Cough Syrup Deaths

A public interest petition seeking an independent investigation into the deaths of 22 children due to contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh was dismissed by a Supreme Court bench on October 10, 2025. The petition sought a judicial commission or expert committee to probe the deaths.

The Bench asked advocate-petitioner Vishal Tiwari about his previous PILs, indicating that he had not taken substantial steps towards investigating the issue. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta intervened, stating that states should take responsibility for investigating such incidents and expressing concerns about the petitioners’ lack of background information or evidence.

A government doctor linked to the deaths was arrested, and the Madhya Pradesh Police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case. An FIR has also been registered against the cough syrup manufacturer. However, the Supreme Court did not take any action on the petition, dismissing it without providing further clarification.
